Cities with the Fastest and Slowest Internet Speeds

Cities With the Fastest and Slowest Internet Speeds

In this analysis, AdvisorSmith discovered the cities in the United States with the fastest and slowest internet speeds available to residents. We used data from the Federal Communications Commission on residential broadband internet speeds to identify the cities that have the fastest and slowest speeds available for residents.

We divided cities into three categories based on population size: large cities with over 250,000 residents, midsize cities with between 100,000 and 250,000 residents, and small cities with between 10,000 and 100,000 residents. In total, we examined broadband speeds in 3,983 U.S. cities.

To determine the cities with the fastest internet speeds, we calculated the percentage of the population with access to at least one provider offering gigabit-speed internet access. To determine the cities with the slowest speeds, we took the average of the percentage of the population with access to 100 Mbps, 250 Mbps, and gigabit internet in their home.

Read on to discover the cities with the fastest and slowest broadband internet speeds.

Cities with the Slowest Broadband Internet

AdvisorSmith determined the cities in the U.S. with the slowest broadband internet by examining the percentage of residents with access to at least one broadband internet provider offering 100 Mbps, 250 Mbps, and 1,000 Mbps internet speeds. We then took the average of these three percentages to find the small, midsize, and large cities with the slowest internet speeds. We list these cities in the tables below, including the percentage of residents with access to the three broadband speeds.

Methodology

In this study, AdvisorSmith discovered the cities in the United States with the fastest and slowest available residential broadband speeds for residents of the city using data from the Federal Communications Commission on Fixed Broadband Deployment data set. We examined the availability of broadband internet providers using any of six fixed broadband internet technologies, which included ADSL, cable, fiber, satellite, wireless, or other broadband. We included 3,983 cities with populations of at least 10,000 residents in our study.

We segmented cities in our analysis based upon the population of each city. Small cities were those with populations between 10,000 and 100,000 residents. Midsize cities were those with between 100,000 and 250,000 residents, while large cities were those with over 250,000 residents.

To determine the cities with the fastest broadband speeds, we considered the percentage of the population in each city with access to one or more broadband providers offering connection speeds of at least 1 Gbps. We then ranked the cities based upon the percentage of population with this access within each of the city size segments.

To determine the cities with the slowest broadband speeds, we calculated the percentage of the population in each city with access to one or more broadband services with connection speeds of 100 Mbps, 250 Mbps, and 1 Gbps. We then took the average of these 3 metrics to calculate a slow broadband score, and we ranked the cities based upon this score, again within the city size segments. Since virtually all cities in this analysis had close to 100% penetration of 25 Mbps and slower internet speeds, we excluded speeds below 100 Mbps from our analysis.
